Alexander Isak continued his impressive scoring form as Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Sunday, giving manager Andoni Iraola his first Premier League win at Anfield.
Liverpool struck twice in the opening 21 minutes, with Pascal Gross turning the ball into his own net before Isak added the second to put the hosts firmly in control.
The result marked another positive step for Isak, who has been finding his rhythm after a difficult first season following his high-profile £125 million move from Newcastle United. The Swedish striker has now scored six goals in seven league appearances this season, including three in his last four matches.
Liverpool’s victory also ended a frustrating run of five consecutive home league games without a win, having drawn four and lost one since last season. Their latest success extended their winning streak in all competitions to four matches following a heavy defeat to Manchester City.
Liverpool made their attacking quality count from the outset, although Brighton had an early opportunity to take the lead. Yasin Ayari failed to convert a promising chance after Diego Gomez’s pass exposed the home defence, allowing the Reds to escape before taking control of the match.
The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute when Florian Wirtz’s effort deflected off Gross and found the back of the net. Four minutes later, Bradley Barcola delivered an excellent cross for Isak, who finished from close range to double Liverpool’s advantage.
Liverpool continued to threaten before the interval, with Cody Gakpo and Ronald Araujo forcing saves from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The visitors also came close to scoring when Ayari struck the post, but Liverpool maintained their two-goal lead.
Brighton attempted to respond after the break, but Liverpool defended effectively to preserve their clean sheet. Although Wirtz was forced off with an injury, the hosts remained in control and secured their first Premier League home victory of the season.
The win lifted Liverpool to fourth place, one point behind third-placed Brighton and six points adrift of league leaders Manchester City. It also marked a fourth consecutive victory in all competitions for Iraola’s side as they began to build momentum after an inconsistent start.
Liverpool now face a busy schedule, with Chelsea visiting Anfield in the League Cup before a crucial Premier League meeting with Arsenal on November 1. Isak’s continued improvement will offer encouragement as the Reds look to maintain their winning run and strengthen their challenge near the top of the table.
