Iraola Refuses to Ease Liverpool’s Intensity Despite Injury Concerns

Posted : 23 October 2026

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has insisted he will maintain his demanding, high-intensity playing style despite a growing list of injuries as his team prepares to host Brighton on Sunday.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Munoz are expected to miss the Premier League encounter, while Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo have recently returned from injuries sustained during international duty. The situation presents Iraola with a challenge as he balances player fitness with the demands of competing in domestic and European football.

The Spaniard’s energetic approach helped establish his reputation at Bournemouth and played a role in securing his move to Liverpool. However, the added demands of a packed schedule have tested his squad’s depth, with limited options available in certain attacking positions.

Speaking ahead of the Brighton match, Iraola made it clear that he would not ask his players to conserve energy simply to last the full 90 minutes. Instead, he expects them to perform at maximum intensity for as long as possible, relying on substitutions to maintain the team’s tempo.

The Liverpool boss explained that he would rather replace tired players or use teammates in unfamiliar positions than allow the team’s performance to drop. He believes the quality of their opponents makes it essential for Liverpool to deliver their best throughout matches.

Liverpool face a difficult challenge against Brighton, who have scored 23 goals in their opening seven Premier League games and sit third in the standings, four points ahead of the Reds. Iraola praised Brighton’s organisation, coaching and confidence, acknowledging that his side would need an outstanding performance to secure victory.

Despite the injury concerns, Iraola remains encouraged by his team’s condition and believes the players have responded well to rotation during a demanding run of fixtures. He said managing fatigue and deciding when to rest players would remain important as Liverpool continue playing every few days.

Szoboszlai is making progress after being forced off during Liverpool’s recent victory over Brentford, but he has yet to resume full training with the group. Iraola suggested the midfielder was approaching a return but confirmed that Sunday’s fixture would come too soon.

With Brighton arriving in strong form, Liverpool will need to maintain their intensity while coping with several absences. Iraola, however, has made his position clear: he will not compromise on the high-energy football he believes is necessary to compete at the highest level.
