Iraola Confirms Liverpool Need a Winger Amid Transfer Speculation

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has confirmed that signing a winger is one of the club's main priorities as preparations continue for the 2026-27 Premier League season.

The Spaniard, who replaced Arne Slot following his departure at the end of last season, admitted Liverpool still have important areas to strengthen after a summer that has already seen significant changes to the squad.

Liverpool have signed Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz but have also lost several experienced players. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have departed, while defender Ibrahima Konaté has also left the club, increasing the need for reinforcements.

Speaking during Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States, Iraola said the club remains flexible in the transfer market but identified the wide attacking position as a clear priority.

"There are obvious situations that we know where we need to sign players. A winger, for example, we definitely need to sign a winger," Iraola said. He added that further business will depend on player availability, transfer fees and the condition of the current squad.

Liverpool have been linked with several attacking players, including RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, although the Bundesliga club are reportedly demanding around £100 million. Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola and RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa have also been mentioned as possible targets.

Iraola also acknowledged concerns over Liverpool's defensive depth, particularly at right-back. He expressed confidence in Conor Bradley as the club's long-term option but admitted the Northern Ireland international is still recovering from injury.

The Liverpool manager explained that the club are evaluating solutions to strengthen both the right-back and centre-back positions before the transfer window closes.

Despite speculation linking goalkeeper Alisson Becker with Juventus, Iraola made it clear he is satisfied with his goalkeeping options. He praised Alisson's leadership qualities and highlighted the Brazilian's importance in helping new signings and younger players settle into the squad.

Iraola also expressed his desire to retain midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who has attracted reported interest from Real Madrid following another impressive campaign and his strong performances for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Liverpool coach described Mac Allister as one of the club's best performers in recent seasons and admitted it is normal for elite clubs to pursue top players. However, he stressed that his focus is on keeping his strongest squad together rather than allowing key players to leave.

Liverpool will begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign away to Newcastle United on August 24 as Iraola looks to make a strong start in his first season at Anfield.
