Iran Rescue Draw Against New Zealand as Cape Verde Shock Spain in World Cup Opener

Posted : 16 June 2026

Iran marked their long-awaited return to World Cup action with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday, while tournament newcomers Cape Verde produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round by holding Spain to a scoreless stalemate.

The Group G clash at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles attracted significant attention due to uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation following tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East. New Zealand twice took the lead through Elijah Just, but Iran responded on both occasions, with Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi finding the net to secure a valuable point.

Despite the comeback, Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei voiced frustration over logistical and travel challenges his team has faced since arriving in North America. Iran had originally planned to base themselves in Arizona but relocated to Mexico amid ongoing visa-related difficulties involving United States authorities.

Ghalenoei claimed several members of Iran’s delegation were denied visas and said the team had been instructed to leave the United States immediately after their match. He argued that the circumstances had placed additional pressure on his squad but insisted the players remained focused on performing at their best.

Outside the stadium, hundreds of demonstrators gathered to protest against Iran’s government. Some supporters inside the venue displayed symbols linked to Iran’s pre-revolution era despite FIFA regulations prohibiting political messages within stadiums. However, the match itself unfolded without major disruptions, and Iran received strong support from many fans in attendance.

Earlier in the day, Spain were left frustrated after Cape Verde earned a remarkable 0-0 draw in their first-ever World Cup appearance. The European champions dominated possession and created numerous opportunities but were unable to break down a disciplined Cape Verde defense.

Goalkeeper Vozinha emerged as the standout performer for the African side, producing a series of crucial saves to preserve the historic result. The veteran shot-stopper described the draw as a dream come true and praised his teammates for competing successfully against one of world football’s elite nations.

Cape Verde’s participation in the tournament was made possible by the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams, and the underdogs seized their opportunity with a display full of determination and resilience. Despite the setback, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente remained optimistic, expressing confidence that his side still has the quality to progress deep into the competition.

In another Group G encounter, Egypt looked set for a memorable victory over Belgium after Emam Ashour opened the scoring. However, substitute Romelu Lukaku helped turn the momentum in Belgium’s favor, with pressure from the veteran striker leading to an own goal by Mohamed Hany that secured a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, in Group H, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay also shared the points. Abdulelah Al-Amri gave Saudi Arabia the advantage before Maxi Araujo struck late to earn Uruguay a 1-1 draw in Miami.
