Ipswich Town have officially completed the permanent signing of striker Chuba Akpom from Dutch giants Ajax. The move follows the club’s successful promotion to the Premier League after a long absence from the top flight. An automatic purchase clause was triggered once the Tractor Boys secured their elevation.
The 30-year-old forward spent the 2025/2026 season on loan at Portman Road. He has now committed his long-term future to the club by signing a contract that runs until June 2029. Reports indicate the transfer fee is approximately £8 million or €9.2 million.
Ipswich confirmed their Premier League return on May 2 with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. Goals from George Hirst, Jaden Philogene, and Kasey McAteer secured the necessary points in front of a sold-out home crowd. Kieran McKenna’s side finished the Championship season in second place with 84 points.
Akpom made 31 appearances in all competitions during the promotion-winning campaign. Although he only found the net twice, his experience and physical presence were vital for the squad. He originally joined Ajax from Middlesbrough in 2023 but struggled to find consistent form in the Eredivisie.
Ajax released an official statement confirming the agreement and the exercise of the buy option. The Amsterdam club noted that Akpom had previously been under contract with them until 2028. He leaves the Netherlands having played 68 official matches and scoring 23 goals for the four-time European champions.
The striker will now prepare for life in the Premier League under the guidance of Kieran McKenna. Ipswich are moving quickly to assemble a squad capable of competing with England’s elite teams next season. Fans expect more arrivals as the club looks to cement its place in the top division.
