Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi and midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu have each received a one-match suspension, and both Inter and AC Milan have been fined due to their connections with "ultra" fan groups. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) imposed these sanctions on Thursday following the arrest of 19 prominent "ultras" last September, many of whom are suspected of ties to the 'Ndrangheta mafia.
These individuals were associated with the two Milan clubs, raising concerns about unauthorized relations between the clubs and their hardcore fan groups.
Inzaghi’s ban means he will not be on the bench for Inter’s upcoming match against Verona, while Calhanoglu will also be unavailable. The defending champions are currently second in Serie A, just three points behind Napoli, and are looking to maintain their push for the title.
Inter were fined €70,000, and AC Milan received a €30,000 penalty due to their links with fan groups such as Inter’s "Curva Nord" and Milan’s "Curva Sud," both of which are considered unauthorized by the FIGC.
The penalties come after plea-bargaining arrangements between the individuals involved and the authorities. In addition to the suspensions, Calhanoglu faces a €30,000 fine, while Inzaghi has been fined €15,000. Javier Zanetti, the former Inter player now serving as the club’s vice-president, was also fined €14,500 for his role in the matter.
