International Friendly: Portugal edge spirited Super Eagles as Chelle suffers second defeat in 25 matches

Posted : 11 June 2026

Nigeria's Super Eagles delivered a spirited and commendable performance but fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Portugal in an international friendly played at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria.

The result marked only the second regulation-time defeat for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle in his last 25 matches spanning approximately 15 months, as the three-time African champions pushed the FIFA World Cup-bound Portuguese side all the way in an entertaining contest.

Prior to kick-off, midfielder Alexander Iwobi was honoured for reaching the milestone of 100 appearances for Nigeria. Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Shehu Dikko, alongside NFF Executive Committee member Sharif Rabiu Inuwa, presented the Fulham star with a commemorative framed jersey.

Led by legendary captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal began brightly and nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute, but the veteran forward failed to beat goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. Nigeria responded almost immediately through Akor Adams, whose effort drifted narrowly wide.

Portugal eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto finished from close range after being set up by Diogo Dalot during a swift attacking move.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Okoye producing a brilliant save to deny Bruno Fernandes in the 33rd minute before Ronaldo sent a header just wide moments later.

Nigeria, however, remained composed and found a deserved equaliser eight minutes before halftime. Adams showed tremendous strength and determination to win an aerial challenge near the halfway line before timing his run perfectly to receive a pass from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and fire beyond goalkeeper Diogo Costa to make it 1-1.

The second half saw Portugal increase the pressure, but Okoye remained outstanding between the sticks. The goalkeeper made consecutive saves to deny João Félix shortly after the restart, while Ronaldo's search for a goal continued unsuccessfully.

Chelle introduced fresh legs on the hour mark, bringing on Abdullahi Bewene, Zaidu Sanusi, Terem Moffi, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka.

The substitutions injected renewed energy into Nigeria's play, allowing the visitors to compete aggressively and create promising attacking moments.

Despite Nigeria's resilience, Portugal found the decisive breakthrough in the 75th minute. Francisco Conceição cut in from the right flank and unleashed a strike that found its way past Okoye to restore the hosts' advantage.

Okoye continued his impressive display by denying Félix once again in the closing stages, but Nigeria could not find a second equaliser as Portugal held on for victory.

Although defeated, the Super Eagles emerged from the encounter with plenty of positives. Their organization, intensity, and attacking intent against one of Europe's strongest teams highlighted the progress being made under Chelle, while Okoye's commanding performance and Adams' well-taken goal provided further encouragement ahead of future competitive assignments.

The closely contested fixture demonstrates that the Nigerian squad can go toe-to-toe with elite tactical setups on the global stage. As the technical crew looks to build on these defensive and offensive structures, the takeaways from Leiria will serve as vital preparation for upcoming qualifying campaigns. Football fans can remain optimistic about the team's upward trajectory under the current leadership.
