International Friendly: Iwobi's century cap, Chelle's unbeaten run under spotlight against Portugal

Posted : 11 June 2026

Nigeria's Super Eagles will put their impressive recent form on the line when they face Portugal in a high-profile international friendly at the Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night.

While the encounter carries the label of a friendly, there is plenty at stake for both sides. Portugal are using the match as their final preparation before the FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria are eager to extend an impressive unbeaten sequence that has transformed the team's outlook under head coach Éric Sékou Chelle.

Since taking charge, Chelle has overseen a remarkable turnaround, guiding the Super Eagles through a series of strong performances across World Cup qualifiers, the Africa Cup of Nations, and international friendlies.

The Franco-Malian tactician has suffered just one defeat in regulation time in 24 matches, making Wednesday's clash another significant test of his growing credentials.

Adding further significance to the occasion is a personal milestone for midfielder Alex Iwobi, who is set to earn his 100th senior international cap for Nigeria.

The Fulham star has been one of the team's most consistent performers and will be honoured before kick-off as he joins an elite group of centurions in Nigerian football history.

Standing in Nigeria's path is a Portugal side packed with world-class talent and led by legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Head coach Roberto Martínez has assembled a formidable squad featuring Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Rafael Leão, João Félix, and Nélson Semedo as the Europeans continue preparations for their World Cup campaign.

Portugal arrive in a confident mood after extending their unbeaten run to four matches, including victories over the United States and Chile. Their most recent outing saw Bruno Fernandes produce a man-of-the-match display in a 2-1 win over Chile in Lisbon.

History also favours the hosts. The last senior meeting between the two nations ended in a convincing 4-0 victory for Portugal in Lisbon in November 2022.

However, the current Super Eagles side appears more organised and resilient, with Chelle building a team capable of competing against elite opposition.

Nigeria will be without key attackers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, but the return of Samuel Chukwueze strengthens the attacking options alongside Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi, Akor Adams, and the impressive Philip Otele.

Defensively, the Eagles have suffered a setback with the injury-enforced departure of Igoh Ogbu, but experienced campaigners Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi remain available, while debutant Abdullahi Bewene could retain his place after an eye-catching performance against Poland.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi is expected to marshal the midfield alongside Iwobi and one of Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, or Tochukwu Nnadi, as Nigeria look to match Portugal's technical quality and attacking threat.

The Super Eagles head into the encounter buoyed by recent results, including victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, as well as a hard-fought draw against Poland.

Their growing confidence will be tested by one of Europe's strongest sides, but another positive result would further underline the progress made under Chelle.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:45pm in Leiria, which is also 8:45pm Nigerian time, with both teams aiming to carry momentum into the challenges that lie ahead.

This highly anticipated encounter represents a crucial measuring stick for the Super Eagles' ongoing tactical evolution under Chelle. Facing a world-class Portuguese lineup will demand the utmost defensive discipline and clinical efficiency from the traveling side. Ultimately, the match offers a prime opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate that their recent progress can translate into competitive performances against global heavyweights.
