Inter Milan Defeat River Plate to Reach Club World Cup Last 16

Posted : 26 June 2025

Inter Milan marched into the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a tense 2-0 win over Argentina’s River Plate on Wednesday. Goals from teenage striker Francesco Esposito and defender Alessandro Bastoni secured the result for the Italian giants, while River’s campaign collapsed under pressure, ending with two players sent off and unruly scenes at the final whistle. The game, played at Seattle's Lumen Field, turned into a heated contest marred by fan unrest and scuffles between players after the final whistle.

Esposito, just 19, scored his first senior goal for Inter in the 72nd minute with a composed finish after a clever pass from Petar Sucic. River’s hopes of a comeback took a fatal blow when Lucas Martinez Quarta was sent off minutes earlier for denying a clear scoring opportunity. Inter pressed home their advantage, and Bastoni sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal, putting the result beyond doubt.

River's night worsened when Gonzalo Montiel was also dismissed in added time, reducing the Argentine side to nine men. The defeat, combined with Monterrey’s dominant 4-0 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds, ensured River’s elimination from Group E. Meanwhile, Inter will now prepare for a last 16 showdown with Brazil’s Fluminense on Monday.

Despite an uneventful first half, Inter gained control after the break and capitalized on River's defensive errors. The loss not only ended River’s tournament run but also highlighted their disciplinary struggles, as their frustration boiled over in a chaotic finale that overshadowed an otherwise composed performance from Inter.
