Inter Miami Targets Another Argentine Midfielder to Strengthen Squad

After celebrating their first-ever MLS championship, Inter Miami are already planning for the next phase of their project, aiming to address gaps left by the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. While Sergio Reguilon has been brought in to cover the left-back position, attention has turned to bolstering the midfield with another Argentine presence.

Inter Miami’s strategy is clearly focused on surrounding Lionel Messi with familiar teammates, and Giovani Lo Celso has emerged as the ideal candidate. Although Lo Celso typically plays a more attacking role compared to Busquets, he has experience operating deeper in the Argentine national team alongside Rodrigo De Paul, allowing Messi to occupy the advanced playmaker role. This adaptability makes him a perfect fit for Javier Mascherano’s tactical setup in Miami.

Currently under contract with Real Betis until 2028, Lo Celso has attracted genuine interest from Inter Miami, according to El Correo de Andalucía. The club sees him as a proven, top-quality midfielder capable of contributing immediately, both to retain the MLS crown and to compete strongly in the Concachampions.

Lo Celso’s 2024 return to Betis saw him shine with eight goals in just three months across LaLiga and European competitions. However, injuries disrupted the early part of 2025, limiting his minutes and reducing his consistency in the starting lineup. Despite these setbacks, he continued to deliver crucial goals when called upon, a trait that aligns with Inter Miami’s need for players who can influence tight matches.

From Betis’ perspective, a transfer exceeding five million euros would create salary flexibility and allow for additional attacking reinforcements. For Lo Celso, moving to MLS presents an attractive proposition: consistent playing time, reunion with national teammates including Messi, a strong salary package, and the opportunity to stay in shape ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Inter Miami are working proactively to secure this strategic signing, aiming to maintain their competitive edge and solidify their status as one of the most ambitious and enticing projects in North American football.
