Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati on Wednesday after a dramatic second half produced four goals. The result dealt a blow to Miami’s hopes of securing second place in the MLS Eastern Conference, with New England Revolution moving two points clear after defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-2.
The opening half offered little attacking excitement, as Miami dominated possession but struggled to find a way through Cincinnati’s defence. Messi was closely marked throughout the contest, limiting his opportunities to influence the game in front of goal.
Miami eventually broke the deadlock in the 61st minute through Luis Suárez. Rodrigo De Paul initiated the move before Casemiro delivered the ball to the Uruguayan striker, who controlled it and curled a superb finish into the far top corner.
Cincinnati responded strongly and levelled the score in the 80th minute. Kenji Mboma Dem produced an impressive individual effort, using quick footwork to create space before bending the ball beyond goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
The visitors then turned the game around six minutes later. Samuel Gidi found the net in the 86th minute after a swift attacking move, giving Cincinnati a 2-1 advantage and putting Miami under pressure in the closing stages.
However, Miami avoided defeat thanks to substitute Riquelme Fillipi, who scored in the 90th minute. The young Brazilian cut inside before guiding a curling effort into the far side of the net, restoring parity and securing a valuable point for the home side.
Both teams had opportunities to snatch a winner during stoppage time. Suárez was unable to convert one chance for Miami, while Cincinnati’s Evander saw a goal-bound effort blocked by defender Ian Fray.
The draw leaves Miami trailing New England by two points in the battle for second place in the Eastern Conference. The two sides are scheduled to meet on Sunday in a crucial fixture that could have a major impact on the final standings.
For Cincinnati, the result keeps their playoff ambitions alive, although they still need to strengthen their position with two regular-season matches remaining.
