Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos Renew City Rivalry in Historic NPFL Derby

The long wait for a Lagos derby in Nigeria’s top-flight football league will finally end on Sunday when Inter Lagos host Sporting Lagos at the Onikan Stadium.

The Match Day 3 encounter of the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season marks the first-ever top-flight meeting between the two clubs and the return of a league derby to Lagos after more than a decade.

For a city that once regularly produced fierce top-flight rivalries, Sunday’s fixture represents a significant moment in the evolution of football in Lagos.

The city’s derby tradition dates back to the battles involving Stationery Stores and Julius Berger, two clubs that once commanded huge followings and dominated conversations around Lagos football.

That tradition faded following the decline of both clubs in the early 1990s, leaving Lagos without a sustained local rivalry in the top flight.

MFM FC later restored some of that excitement after gaining promotion to the elite division, with Ikorodu United joining them two years later. However, that rivalry was short-lived following Ikorodu United’s relegation.

The last Lagos derby in the top flight was played in March 2016, making Sunday’s encounter a significant return for the city’s football supporters.

The fixture has gained even greater importance following the postponement of Sporting Lagos’ scheduled derby against Ikorodu City on Match Day 2 after the stadium was unavailable due to a political rally.

With that fixture yet to take place, Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos will now provide the first opportunity for Lagos fans to witness a top-flight city rivalry this season.

Beyond the historical significance, however, both teams have plenty to prove.

Inter Lagos enter the contest without a point from their opening two matches, having suffered a 2–1 defeat to Shooting Stars before losing 1–0 to Doma United.

Sporting Lagos, meanwhile, have also endured a difficult beginning but will draw confidence from their previous meetings with Inter.

Inter have never lost to Sporting in their previous encounters, recording three wins and one draw across friendly and second-tier meetings.

The NPFL, however, presents a different test, with both clubs now competing at the highest level and the stakes considerably higher.

Sporting’s away record will also be under scrutiny. The club have yet to win an away league match in their history, with 16 defeats and four draws from 20 outings.

That record could make Sunday’s assignment particularly difficult, although the unusual nature of a derby often makes form and statistics secondary to determination, intensity and local pride.

For Inter Lagos, the occasion provides an opportunity to turn their first NPFL campaign into a memorable one by securing their maiden top-flight points against their city rivals.

For Sporting Lagos, it is a chance to end their poor away run while establishing an early claim to Lagos supremacy.

With both sides desperate for a breakthrough and neither willing to surrender local bragging rights, Sunday’s encounter promises to be more than an ordinary league fixture.

After 10 years of waiting, Lagos is finally set for another top-flight derby, and the first chapter of the Inter Lagos–Sporting Lagos rivalry could begin with history, pride and three valuable points at stake.
