Inter Lagos Hit With Heavy Sanctions After Katsina United Clash

Posted : 07 October 2026

Inter Lagos have been handed a major disciplinary setback after the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) sanctioned the club over breaches arising from their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The Lagos club was found to have breached several provisions of the NPFL27 Framework and Rules following incidents involving match officials after the encounter.

Among the most significant sanctions is the deduction of three points and three goals from Inter Lagos’ accumulated records for assaulting and causing injury to the first assistant referee.

The club was also slammed with a combined fine of ₦5.25 million over failures relating to security, the treatment of match officials and the assault on the officials.

According to the NPFL, Inter Lagos failed to provide adequate and effective security during the home fixture, allowing unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas.

The development reportedly led to an attack on match officials as they proceeded from the dressing room to their vehicle after the match.

The league body further accused the club of failing to ensure proper conduct by its officials and supporters, resulting in the match officials being held hostage for more than an hour after the encounter.

Inter Lagos officials, alongside some supporters, were also alleged to have intimidated, harassed and verbally abused the match officials in conduct deemed capable of bringing the league into disrepute.

The disciplinary panel further established that the club’s team manager and some supporters assaulted the match officials.

The first assistant referee reportedly sustained an injury to the face and lost personal belongings, including suffering damage to his mobile telephone.

For failing to provide adequate and effective security, Inter Lagos were fined ₦2 million, while another ₦1 million was imposed for holding the match officials hostage for more than an hour.

The club was handed an additional ₦2 million fine for the assault on the officials.

A further ₦250,000 was awarded as compensation to the affected assistant referee for the loss of personal items, damage to his mobile phone and treatment of the injury sustained during the incident.

The three-point and three-goal deductions could have a significant impact on Inter Lagos’ position and prospects in the NPFL, adding further pressure to the club as the season progresses.

The sanctions underline the league’s increasingly firm stance on the safety and protection of match officials and the conduct expected from clubs, their officials and supporters.

Inter Lagos have 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the sanctions.

The club must now decide whether to challenge the disciplinary measures or accept the punishment as it seeks to navigate the sporting and administrative consequences of the incident.
