Inter and Roma stage late comebacks to share Serie A top spot

Posted : 07 September 2026

Inter Milan and Roma maintained perfect starts to the Serie A season after dramatic victories on Saturday. Inter recovered from two goals down to beat Napoli 3-2, while Roma scored twice in the final minutes to defeat Atalanta 2-1.

Inter appeared to be heading for their first defeat of the campaign after Napoli established a two-goal lead early in the second half. Matteo Politano opened the scoring in the 50th minute before Rasmus Hojlund doubled the advantage three minutes later with a powerful finish from the edge of the area.

The champions responded quickly through captain Lautaro Martinez. The Argentina international finished from a Federico Dimarco cross to give Inter renewed hope, before Marcus Thuram levelled the match with a powerful header in the 82nd minute.

Inter then completed the comeback in the 91st minute. Napoli failed to clear a corner and Martinez reacted quickest inside the penalty area to score his second goal of the match and preserve Inter's perfect league record.

Inter coach Cristian Chivu praised his players for continuing to attack after the score reached 2-2. He said both teams created chances instead of settling for the draw, while Martinez highlighted the team's improved fighting spirit after a disappointing previous campaign.

The victory leaves Inter on nine points from three matches. Napoli, who were runners-up last season, remain on three points after suffering their second defeat of the campaign.

Roma produced an equally dramatic comeback at the Stadio Olimpico. Atalanta took the lead through Ederson, who struck early in the second half after Roma had dominated much of the opening period.

Roma continued to press despite several missed opportunities. Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi made a series of important saves, while Roma also saw efforts hit the woodwork before Mario Hermoso finally equalised with a looping header in the 90th minute.

Matias Soule completed the turnaround in the 93rd minute. The substitute reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and fired home to send the home supporters into celebration.

The victory extended Roma's perfect start to three wins from three matches. They have nine points and a superior goal difference to Inter, while Atalanta remain on six points after their first defeat of the season.

Roma's victory was also their first over Atalanta since March 2022. The result gives Gian Piero Gasperini's side a major confidence boost ahead of their return to the Champions League, where they face Fenerbahce next week.
