Inter, AC Milan Unveil £1.2 Billion Generali Stadium to Replace San Siro

Posted : 30 October 2026

Inter Milan and AC Milan have officially unveiled plans for their new shared home, Generali Stadium, which is expected to replace the historic San Siro from the 2031/32 football season. The announcement, made in Milan on Thursday, October 29, 2026, revealed the design of a modern 71,500-capacity arena that aims to preserve the atmosphere of the existing ground while offering supporters an improved matchday experience.

Designed by renowned architect Norman Foster in collaboration with stadium specialist David Manica, the proposed stadium will feature a distinctive structure that remains relatively low at its centre before rising dramatically behind both goals. The design places particular emphasis on creating an intense atmosphere by bringing supporters closer to the action.

Manica explained that preserving the emotional connection associated with San Siro was a major consideration throughout the design process. According to the stadium specialist, the project focuses on maintaining the unique relationship between the supporters and the pitch rather than simply reproducing the appearance of the existing venue.

The new ground will feature steep stands with an inclination of up to 37 degrees behind the goals, allowing fans to sit closer to the playing surface. Its roof will cover the seating areas while leaving the pitch exposed, with carefully planned acoustics intended to capture and intensify the noise generated by supporters.

Generali Stadium will also be designed to accommodate events beyond football, including American football, rugby and major concerts. The development will incorporate modern facilities and entertainment spaces, making it a destination for visitors throughout the year.

The project carries an estimated construction cost of €1.2 billion, with the clubs having previously paid €197 million to acquire the existing San Siro stadium and surrounding parking areas. The new venue will accommodate approximately 71,500 spectators, slightly fewer than the current stadium's capacity of around 75,000.

Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with the first match targeted for the 2031/32 season, subject to the necessary approvals. Both clubs intend to continue using San Siro while work on their new home progresses.

The existing venue, officially known as the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, opened in 1926 and has become one of the most recognisable football grounds in Europe. Despite several renovations over the years, the stadium has struggled to meet the modern requirements of the clubs and their supporters.

Once the new facility approaches completion, much of San Siro is expected to be demolished, bringing an end to an important chapter in Italian football history. The development will mark a major transformation for Inter and AC Milan as they prepare to share a modern stadium while seeking to preserve the traditions and atmosphere that have defined their historic home.
