Infantino Calls FIFA Crisis Meeting as Opposition Grows Over Commercial Sell-Off Plan

Posted : 04 August 2026

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called a high-level meeting in Rabat, Morocco, as mounting criticism continues to surround his abandoned proposal to transfer parts of FIFA's commercial and event operations into a new investment entity.

The emergency gathering comes after several influential figures within world football publicly distanced themselves from the plan, intensifying pressure on the governing body's leadership.

Among the strongest critics is FIFA's chief of global football development, Arsène Wenger, who insisted he had no involvement in developing the proposal and only learned of it through media reports.

Wenger welcomed the decision to withdraw the initiative, stressing that FIFA must remain an independent organization committed to transparency, integrity and serving the interests of the game.

FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström also condemned the episode, describing it as a regrettable period for the organization while urging staff to remain focused on supporting football's global development despite the political turmoil.

The controversy deepened after Jordan Football Association president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein accused FIFA of attempting to pressure his federation into supporting Infantino's re-election campaign.

Prince Ali alleged that financial matters, including outstanding prize money and other forms of assistance, were linked to political backing for the FIFA president, describing the situation as unacceptable.

FIFA has not publicly responded to the allegations, which have added to growing concerns over governance within the organization.

The failed commercial proposal has already claimed one senior casualty, with adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigning after calling the investment plan harmful to football's long-term future.

Infantino now faces the difficult task of rebuilding confidence among FIFA officials and member associations as divisions over the governing body's leadership continue to widen ahead of key meetings later this year.
