The government of Imo State has initiated plans to restore the stadium named after the late Nigerian football icon, Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji. Located in Orlu, the facility has recently been the subject of public concern due to its deteriorating condition. Recent reports highlighted that the stadium had become abandoned and unkempt, sparking calls for urgent intervention to preserve the legend's legacy.

Samuel Okwaraji remains a revered figure in Nigerian sports history after his tragic death during a World Cup qualifier in 1989. He collapsed while playing for the Super Eagles against Angola at the National Stadium in Lagos. Since then, the stadium in his hometown of Orlu has served as a primary memorial to his contributions to national and state football.

Honourable Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha, the Imo State Commissioner for Sports, confirmed that the state is now taking concrete steps toward rehabilitation. He revealed that high-level discussions have already taken place to address the current state of the arena. The commissioner emphasized that the state government is committed to ensuring the facility reflects the prestige of the man it was named after.

According to the commissioner, the project has the full attention of Governor Hope Uzodinma. During recent executive briefings, the governor expressed a desire to provide the late midfielder with a posthumous reward befitting his sacrifice. Onyeocha noted that Okwaraji was a proud son of Orlu whose dedication to the national team continues to inspire young athletes across Nigeria.

The rehabilitation effort aims to transform the stadium from its current derelict state into a modern sporting hub. This move is expected to boost local sports development and provide a functional venue for youth competitions in the region. It also addresses long-standing complaints from the Okwaraji family regarding the neglect of the player's heritage.
