Ikorodu City and Rangers Set for High-Stakes NPFL Finale in Lagos

Posted : 24 May 2026

The Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos will host one of the biggest matches of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season on Sunday as Ikorodu City take on Rangers International in a decisive Matchday 38 encounter. The fixture carries enormous significance for both clubs, with the title race and continental qualification still unresolved.

Rangers arrive in Lagos aiming to secure a historic ninth NPFL title, while Ikorodu City are chasing a place in continental football in what has been an impressive debut campaign in the top flight. The Oga Boys currently sit fourth on the table with 58 points, just two behind Shooting Stars in the final continental qualification spot.

A victory for the Lagos side, combined with favourable results elsewhere, could seal a CAF Confederation Cup ticket and crown a remarkable first season in the NPFL. Ikorodu City will also be motivated by the chance to record their first league victory over Rangers after losing all previous meetings.

Coach Bright Ozebagbe’s team have developed a strong home record this season, turning the Mobolaji Johnson Arena into a difficult venue for visiting sides. Their confidence will be boosted by home support as they attempt to disrupt Rangers’ title ambitions.

For Rangers, the task is straightforward. A positive result would guarantee the league title regardless of what closest challengers Rivers United achieve in their final game. The Flying Antelopes currently lead the standings by a single point and know victory could see them equal Enyimba’s record of nine league crowns.

Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men head into the contest in solid form, unbeaten in their last five league games and boasting one of the strongest away records in the division this season.

The encounter will also feature an intriguing battle for the NPFL Golden Boot, with Rangers striker Godwin Obaje and Ikorodu City forward Joseph Arumala level on 11 goals each ahead of the final round of matches.

Both teams will, however, miss some players due to international call-ups for the Unity Cup in London, slightly affecting squad depth ahead of the crucial fixture.

With the league title, continental qualification and top scorer award all potentially decided in Lagos, Sunday’s showdown promises to deliver a dramatic end to the NPFL season.
