2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 1 Review: Ikorodu City Earns First Away Point in Ilorin as Game Against Kwara United Ends in Stalemate

Posted : 26 August 2025

Ikorodu City FC began their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign on a positive note, earning a valuable away point against Kwara United FC in Ilorin.

The match ended in a goalless draw at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl, George Innih Stadium. Following the stalemate, Kwara United coach Tunde Sanni praised Ikorodu City goalkeeper Micheal Atata for denying his team a deserved victory.

Speaking after the match, Sanni described the encounter as “not a bad game” but stressed that his side created enough opportunities to win.

“It was not a bad game. Ikorodu were lucky not to have conceded at least three goals because their goalkeeper made crucial saves today. We deserved to win, but their goalkeeper denied us. We will bounce back,” he said.

Kwara United’s assistant captain, Kabiru Mohammed, also expressed frustration over the result, noting that taking a single point was not part of the team’s plan.

“Sharing the points was not our intention. We will improve and make sure we convert our chances in the next game,” he added.

The match saw several injuries, with Akanni Akeem and Saheed Olaniyi both stretchered off after sustaining knocks. Kwara United midfielder Shola Abdulraheem tested Atata on three occasions, but the goalkeeper stood firm with impressive saves to keep Ikorodu City in the game.

Looking ahead, Kwara United will travel to Port Harcourt for their Matchday 2 clash against Rivers United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Saturday.
