2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 25 Review: Arumala’s Brace Seals Controlled Win as Ikorodu City Outclass Niger Tornadoes

Posted : 08 February 2026

Ikorodu City FC delivered a disciplined and commanding performance on Sunday to defeat Niger Tornadoes 2–0 in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 25 clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

Rather than a frantic contest, the encounter unfolded as a calculated display of control from the Oga Boys, who dictated the tempo for long spells and showed patience in breaking down a resolute Tornadoes side.

The first half saw Ikorodu City dominate possession while probing for openings against a compact Niger Tornadoes defence. Their persistence paid off in the 33rd minute when Chidera Opara was brought down inside the box, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a penalty.

Joseph Arumala stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot kick to give the hosts a deserved lead.

After the break, Niger Tornadoes attempted to press higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser, but Ikorodu City’s defensive organisation, marshalled from the back, ensured the visitors created little in terms of clear chances.

As the game stretched in the closing stages, Ikorodu City capitalised on spaces left by the visitors. In the 88th minute, defender Jaguar Uche delivered a precise pass that found Arumala in stride, and the forward made no mistake with a low finish to the goalkeeper’s right to seal the victory.

The brace not only underlined Arumala’s growing influence in the squad but also highlighted Ikorodu City’s efficiency in front of goal.

Speaking after the match, head coach Bright Ozadegbe said his side approached the game with the same mindset they apply to every fixture.

“The feeling is the same whether we play at home or away. Every game is important to us,” he said.

He commended Arumala’s contribution, describing him as a key part of the team’s attacking threat.

“Arumala is doing well and taking it one goal at a time. We keep encouraging him because he is important to the team, just like every other player.

“He is in good form now, and we will continue to support him to improve. We take it one game at a time,” Ozadegbe said.

The result further reflects Ikorodu City’s growing maturity in managing games, combining defensive discipline with attacking precision when it matters most.
