Ikorodu City Hand Rangers First Defeat as Champions Stumble in Lagos

Ikorodu City delivered one of the standout results of Matchday 6 of the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), defeating defending champions Enugu Rangers 2-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

The hosts set the tone early, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Aderemi Adeoye, whose well-executed free kick gave Rangers an early setback.

Rangers, who had gone unbeaten in their opening five league matches, struggled to find a response as Ikorodu City maintained their intensity and protected their advantage into the interval.

Ikechukwu Junior eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 63rd minute, finding the net to give the Lagos side a two-goal cushion and secure a memorable victory over the reigning champions.

The result handed Rangers their first defeat of the campaign and provided Ikorodu City with a significant boost as the season gathers momentum.

The encounter also attracted notable attention off the pitch, with NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi among spectators at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Obi watched the match alongside Ikorodu City President Sanmi Doherty and was seen interacting with spectators and taking photographs with fans during the half-time interval.

Across the league, Matchday 6 produced 15 goals from 10 matches, with two fixtures ending in draws.

With six rounds now completed, the latest set of results further underlined the competitive nature of the 2026/2027 NPFL campaign, with established sides and ambitious challengers continuing to trade important points.
