2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 27 Review: Ikorodu City FC Held at Home by Resilient Bayelsa United FC

Posted : 22 February 2026

Ikorodu City FC’s bid to strengthen their grip on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) summit suffered a minor setback on Sunday, as they were forced to a 1-1 home draw by a spirited Bayelsa United FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

The league leaders, who have been impressive this season under coach Bright Ozadegbe, found themselves stunned midway through the first half when a defensive mix-up gifted the visitors the lead in the 35th minute.

The Prosperity Boys took full advantage, silencing the home crowd with a composed finish.

Sensing a dip in momentum, Ikorodu City FC coach Bright Ozadegbe reacted quickly, replacing Rasheed Owolabi with Folarin Temitope in the 39th minute to restore stability in midfield.

However, despite increased pressure, Ikorodu City went into the break trailing.

At the restart, the coach made a bold triple change to spark his side into life, handing debuts to Olanrewaju Molade and Kelvin Briggs while introducing Chidera Oparaocha.

The decisions paid off almost immediately, as Molade marked his first league appearance with a stunning equaliser, curling a direct free-kick beyond the reach of Bayelsa United’s goalkeeper.

Despite dominating possession and creating a few half-chances late on, Ikorodu City couldn’t find a winner, as Bayelsa United stood firm defensively to claim a precious away point.

Speaking after the game, Technical Adviser Bright Ozadegbe remained calm and optimistic about his team’s prospects.

“There’s no cause for alarm. It was a draw, and that’s part of football.

“The team will respond in our next game. Our focus and target for the season remain unchanged,” he said.

The draw leaves Ikorodu City FC on 45 points — just one point ahead of Rangers International FC, who sit in second place. With 12 wins, 9 draws, and 6 losses so far, the Oga Boys will now look to bounce back in their next fixture to reassert their dominance in the title race.
