Ikorodu City Football Academy has achieved a dramatic and hard-fought promotion to the Nigeria National League (NNL), following an emphatic 4–1 victory over Franceex United on Monday morning. The win came on Matchday 3 of the 2025 Nationwide League One (NLO) Playoffs held in Ijebu Ode.
Heading into their final group match, Ikorodu City FA were tied on points with Magic Stars FC but trailed on goal difference. The equation was clear—they had to win, and win convincingly. And that’s exactly what they did.
The game didn’t begin as the Lagos-based club would have hoped. Franceex United took an early lead in the 5th minute through Gabriel Kennedy, a goal that stunned fans at the Ijebu Ode Stadium and remained the only score of the first half.
With everything to play for in the second half, Ikorodu City came out firing. Willie Kammonke equalized in the 51st minute, shifting the momentum in their favor. Just 10 minutes later, Ibifubara Dagogo calmly converted a penalty to give Ikorodu a 2–1 lead.
The pressure intensified, and in the 71st minute, Franceex United’s Azeez Abubakar turned the ball into his own net. Then, in stoppage time, Famoyegun Michael added a fourth goal, sealing the victory and sending the crowd into celebration.
Elsewhere, Magic Stars FC faced off against Lekki United on a nearby training pitch. Despite a 2–0 win with goals from Samuel Olawale and Sesan Israel, it wasn't enough to surpass Ikorodu City on goal difference.
With the final whistle, Ikorodu City’s superior goal margin pushed them ahead of Magic Stars, earning the coveted promotion to the Nigeria National League.
The Lagos side now joins seven other teams that secured promotion through this year’s NLO Playoffs, marking a major milestone for the club’s rising journey.
