2025/2026 NNL Match Day 2: Idris Hails Tactical Discipline as Ekiti United Edge Akwa United

Posted : 01 December 2025

Ekiti United head coach Bolarinwa Idris has praised his side for executing the tactical plan “exactly as designed” after the Bao Boys secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Akwa United in their second match of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League season at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti.

Idris commended the players for their resilience and also appreciated the support of government dignitaries, including Ekiti State’s Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, Olusola Osetoba, and other guests present at the stadium.

He assured fans that the team would build on the performance as they prepare for their next fixture away to Abakaliki FC next weekend.

The match kicked off at exactly 3 p.m., with Ekiti United immediately asserting dominance. Driven by the home crowd, the Bao Boys controlled possession, created space with quick passing, and consistently tested the Akwa United backline.

The Promise Keepers defended bravely in the early stages but eventually cracked under sustained pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when Festus Godwin struck decisively from inside the box to give Ekiti United a well-deserved 1–0 lead heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, Ekiti United made changes—introducing Pius Chikodi and Olaoluwa Elegbeleye—in search of a second goal.

However, Akwa United responded strongly and grabbed an equaliser midway through the half to level the score at 1–1.

Despite the setback, Ekiti United regained momentum and continued to push forward.

Their persistence was rewarded late in the match when the referee awarded a penalty after an Akwa United defender handled the ball inside the box. Substitute Pius Chikodi stepped up confidently and converted from the spot in the 88th minute, sending the home supporters into celebration and securing the three points.

It was a deserved victory for Ekiti United, who produced a lively, purposeful display in front of their fans, while Akwa United suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
