Akwa United midfielder and University of Uyo first-class graduate, Paulinus Okon, stole the spotlight at the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony after emerging as the Akwa United Player of the Season for the 2025/2026 campaign.
The glamorous event, organised in partnership with Ibom Air, took place at the Uyo Township Stadium and saw millions of naira distributed to players in recognition of their outstanding performances during the season.
Okon, who combined academic excellence with impressive displays on the pitch, received a cash reward of one million naira after a remarkable season with the Promise Keepers. The versatile midfielder played several attacking and midfield roles and contributed four goals as Akwa United secured a second-place finish in the Nigeria National League Southern Conference B.
Nigeria Premier Football League all-time leading scorer and Ibom Air Brand Ambassador, Mfon Udoh, presented the awards to the deserving winners during the ceremony.
Striker Michael Okenwa emerged as the club’s Highest Goal Scorer after netting five times during the season. His efforts earned him a cash prize of one million, five hundred thousand naira.
Creative winger Yannick Menegbe was also rewarded for his attacking contributions after finishing the campaign with five assists. He received one million naira for emerging as the club’s top assist provider.
Akwa United players also benefited from the Team Play Award following the club’s strong collective performances throughout the season. The team received a one million naira reward after completing the campaign unbeaten at home while also recording three away victories and one away draw.
The partnership between Akwa United and Ibom Air has continued to motivate players through several reward initiatives including Player of the Match prizes, monthly recognition awards, and matchday fan packages.
Although the Promise Keepers narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League, the club remains optimistic ahead of next season’s promotion race.
Attention has now shifted to the President Federation Cup, where Akwa United will face El-Kanemi Warriors in a Round of 32 clash scheduled for Monday, June 1, 2026, at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja.
The celebratory event highlighted the successful synergy between corporate sponsorship and football development in Akwa Ibom State. By rewarding both individual brilliance and collective milestones, the organizers have effectively boosted squad morale ahead of upcoming national assignments. With focus shifting immediately to the knockout tournament in Abuja, the team aims to transform this positive motivation into tangible success on the pitch.
