Ibadan United FC targets youth development with NLO debut

Posted : 22 June 2026

Member of the House of Representatives representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, Akin Alabi, has launched Ibadan United Football Club, a new side that will compete in the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), with a strong focus on youth development and talent discovery in Oyo State.

The club, which will feature in the third tier of Nigerian football, is designed to provide promising young footballers from Egbeda/Ona-Ara and other parts of Oyo State with opportunities to develop their careers and secure professional contracts both within Nigeria and abroad.

Speaking during the unveiling, Alabi explained that his decision to establish a football club in Ibadan came after years of hesitation because of his long-standing support for Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), a team he has backed for more than four decades and previously sponsored.

He revealed that about five years ago, he co-founded Lekki United in Lagos alongside his friend, Biola Kazeem. Following the success of several players who attracted interest from European clubs, the decision was made to relocate and rebrand the team as Ibadan United to expand opportunities for football talents in Oyo State.

Alabi said the club would also work alongside established teams such as Shooting Stars by serving as a talent development platform capable of producing players for the Oluyole Warriors and clubs overseas.

"Ibadan United Football Club is here. We play in the third tier of Nigerian football, the NLO. We will make history together," Alabi declared.

Through this initiative, the new team intends to build a sustainable pipeline for raw talent while enhancing the sports ecosystem across the region. By bridging the gap between grassroots football and elite competitions, the club is positioned to create a lasting pathway for the next generation of Nigerian football stars.
