Ghanaian international Iñaki Williams has clinched the 2024/25 Sporty LaLiga MVP award, marking a historic achievement as the first player to win the title in consecutive years. Williams’ standout performances were key to Athletic Club's impressive campaign, which ended with the team securing a coveted Champions League berth for the first time in a decade. Born in Bilbao, Williams played more minutes than any other teammate and was directly involved in 14 goals, underscoring his crucial role in the squad’s success this season.
The announcement was made on Africa Day at a special media event in Johannesburg, South Africa, attended by notable figures including ex-Cameroon and Barcelona player Alex Song and broadcaster Thomas Mlambo. The winner was determined by a blend of votes from a panel of 25 African football journalists and thousands of fans across Sub-Saharan Africa, with Williams leading the poll at 32 percent. Villarreal’s Pape Gueye and Osasuna’s Flavien Enzo Boyomo followed with 12 and 10 percent respectively.
Expressing his gratitude, Williams highlighted the importance of representation and inspiration for African youth, stating that his back-to-back win symbolizes hard work and dedication. He expressed pride in representing African roots in a league celebrated globally for its quality and following. Williams hopes to continue his fine form and aim for a third consecutive MVP award, crediting Athletic Club’s blend of youth and experience for their recent successes.
Sporty Group’s Brand Director, Miguel Puche, and LaLiga Africa’s Managing Director, Tresor Penku, also praised Williams for his exceptional season and ongoing contribution to the sport. They emphasized the growing impact of African players in LaLiga and the importance of showcasing their achievements on the continental stage. Williams joins previous winners Samuel Chukwueze of Nigeria and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou in a growing legacy of African excellence in the Spanish top flight.
