Hugo Ekitike Returns to Face Former Club Eintracht Frankfurt in Champions League

Posted : 21 October 2025

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike will face his former club Eintracht Frankfurt, who are struggling for consistency this season.

When Hugo Ekitike returns to face his former club Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, he will encounter a team that looks very different from the one he left in July. Frankfurt, who finished third in the Bundesliga last season to secure a historic Champions League spot, have struggled for consistency this term, winning only once in their last five games across all competitions.

Liverpool’s attacking line, which has also struggled recently, will be eyeing Frankfurt’s defence, which has conceded 18 goals in those five matches. Last season, Ekitike had been Frankfurt’s key attacking player, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists in 48 games, particularly after the departure of Omar Marmoush to Manchester City in the winter.

Frankfurt has continued its trend of selling top talent for significant fees, with Ekitike joining Liverpool for a reported £69 million ($92 million) in the summer. Since 2020, the departures of Ekitike, Marmoush, Randal Kolo Muani, Luka Jovic, Sebastian Haller, and Willian Pacho have brought in a combined €418 million ($487 million). While the club has shown a strong ability to identify emerging stars, losing key players inevitably triggers a rebuilding phase, leading to moments of brilliance and chaos on the pitch.

In their second Champions League campaign, Frankfurt started with a stunning 5-1 victory over Galatasaray, only to suffer a 5-1 defeat at Atletico Madrid in their next match. In the Bundesliga, they currently sit seventh after seven games, scoring freely but conceding heavily. Sporting director Timmo Hardung believes the Champions League clash against Liverpool could provide a crucial boost. Meanwhile, Ekitike has impressed at Liverpool with five goals in 11 appearances, while other new signings like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are yet to hit their stride. Hardung said, “It will be a completely different game… Liverpool. Champions League. There’s nothing better in football. I’m incredibly excited about it.”
