Howe Reflects on Newcastle’s Post-Isak Adjustments as Liverpool Clash Looms

Posted : 30 January 2026

Newcastle United are still adjusting to the loss of star forward Alexander Isak, who completed a British-record £125 million transfer to Liverpool during the summer window. Magpies manager Eddie Howe admitted on Friday that replacing a player of Isak’s calibre has been a major challenge.

“It’s always difficult when you lose a player like Alex,” Howe said. “He was an outstanding footballer, an unbelievable talent, and we were privileged to have him for the years that we had him. Taking him away changes the dynamics of the team.”

Newcastle reinvested in the squad, bringing in Germany international Nick Woltemade for a club-record £69 million and Yoane Wissa for £55 million. Howe praised their contributions so far, noting Woltemade has scored nine goals across competitions, while Wissa has netted three despite injury issues. However, he emphasized that getting the best out of the new arrivals is an ongoing process, particularly with limited training time together.

Injuries Add Further Complications

Adding to Newcastle’s challenges, Brazilian midfielder Joelinton is expected to miss several weeks due to a groin issue. Howe also faces the looming Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield, with his squad seeking to maintain momentum after a 1-1 Champions League draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile, Alexander Isak’s start at Liverpool has been disrupted by a fibula fracture, delaying his Premier League debut. Manager Arne Slot confirmed that the Sweden international is still using a walker and remains a long way from returning to full training.

Other Premier League Updates

Everton winger Jack Grealish faces a season-ending injury after fracturing his foot, putting his World Cup hopes in jeopardy. The 30-year-old, on loan from Manchester City, had scored two goals and provided six assists in 20 Premier League appearances this season. Manager David Moyes described the injury as a major blow for both the player and the club.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is urging his squad to focus on the positives following a recent slump. Despite taking just two points from their last three league games, the Gunners remain four points clear at the top of the Premier League. Arteta emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence and building on their strong Champions League performance.
