House of Prayer Football Academy (HoP) were crowned champions of the 10th AMAPRO Football Championship on Sunday evening, following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over first-time participants Discovery Talent FA. The closely contested final took place at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Stadium in Ilorin, living up to its billing as a tactical and intense showdown.
The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute, when Abdulganiyu Ridwan headed home the only goal of the match, sending HoP fans and bench into a frenzy. It was a historic goal that not only sealed the victory but also etched Ridwan’s name into the Academy’s folklore.
Both teams entered the final unbeaten and full of confidence. The first half was cagey, with Discovery Talent FA dominating possession and probing for opportunities. However, they were unable to breach the solid defence marshalled by HoP goalkeeper Usman Sodiq, who remained largely untroubled despite the pressure.
After taking the lead, HoP showed tactical discipline and resilience, withstanding a spirited late surge from Discovery Talent. Despite the newcomers’ best efforts, they were unable to find an equaliser, and HoP held firm to secure their maiden AMAPRO title.
At the final whistle, scenes of jubilation erupted among the House of Prayer players, coaching staff, and supporters, many of whom are members of the church community that supports the academy. The triumph marked a major milestone for coach Gbenga David’s team, whose grit, unity, and strategy throughout the tournament were rewarded with silverware.
Though disappointed, Discovery Talent FA can reflect on a phenomenal debut tournament. Their youthful squad impressed fans and neutrals alike with their spirited performances and technical ability, laying a solid foundation for future success.
The championship also recognised individual brilliance, with Adama Isiah claiming the Prince of AMAPRO award as top scorer with five goals, while Tukur Aliyu of Discovery Talent FA was named King of AMAPRO for his outstanding displays throughout the competition.
With this victory, House of Prayer FC not only lift their first AMAPRO trophy but also inscribe their name into the history of the prestigious grassroots football tournament.
