Hossam Hassan Extends Egypt Contract Through 2030 After Strong World Cup Run

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has extended his contract with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) until 2030, securing his position as the Pharaohs' head coach for the next international cycle. The extension follows a historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign for the seven-time African champions.

The EFA confirmed the contract renewal as the association showed continued confidence in Hassan's leadership. The 59-year-old coach took charge of Egypt in February 2024 and has since overseen significant progress with the national team.

Hassan's new deal comes after Egypt produced their best World Cup performance to date. The Pharaohs recorded their first World Cup victory, reached the knockout stage and then defeated Australia on penalties before suffering a narrow 3-2 loss to defending champions Argentina in the last 16.

The campaign also strengthened Hassan's standing as one of the most important figures in Egyptian football. He became the first Egyptian to participate at the World Cup as both a player and a coach, having represented the country at the 1990 tournament.

Before the World Cup, Hassan had already guided Egypt to the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His tenure has therefore produced progress across both continental and global competitions, giving the EFA a strong reason to maintain continuity.

Egypt also showed their competitive growth during the World Cup group stage. They held Belgium to a 1-1 draw in their opening match before recovering from a deficit to defeat New Zealand 3-1, while a dramatic 1-1 draw with Iran secured their progression to the knockout rounds.

Hassan has repeatedly stressed the importance of building a team with a clear identity. He said before the World Cup that the work had started long before the tournament, pointing to the team's development through World Cup and AFCON qualifying campaigns and international friendlies.

The contract extension gives Hassan a long-term mandate to continue developing the Pharaohs. Egypt will now look to build on their World Cup progress and challenge for further honours under a coach who remains one of the country's most celebrated football figures.
