Turkish club Gençlerbirliği and Nigerian winger Henry Onyekuru have mutually agreed to terminate the player's contract ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The decision follows discussions between both parties after the club reportedly informed the former Super Eagles forward that it could not meet his wage demands for the upcoming campaign. An agreement was subsequently reached to end the contract on amicable terms.
As part of the settlement, Gençlerbirliği will pay Onyekuru a portion of the remaining value of his contract. The arrangement allows both the club and the player to move forward without further contractual obligations.
The contract termination means the 29-year-old is now a free agent and can negotiate with clubs without the need for a transfer fee. Interest is expected from teams in Europe, the Middle East and other leagues as he searches for the next chapter of his career.
Onyekuru has built a wealth of experience during his professional career, representing clubs in Belgium, Turkey, France, Greece and Saudi Arabia. His pace, dribbling ability and versatility across the forward line have made him a valuable option throughout his career.
At international level, Onyekuru has earned several appearances for Nigeria and was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Although he has not featured regularly for the national team in recent years, he remains one of the country's experienced attacking players.
Gençlerbirliği will now continue preparations for the new Turkish football season without the Nigerian, while Onyekuru focuses on securing a new club before the transfer window closes.
His next move will be closely monitored, with the experienced winger aiming to return to regular football and revive his chances of competing at the highest level once again.
