Champions League Quarter-Finals Set: Heavyweights Clash on Road to Budapest Final

Posted : 19 March 2026

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage has reached its decisive phase, with the quarter-final lineup now confirmed. In a format change from previous seasons, the draw conducted during the round of 16 has already mapped out the entire path to the final.

This means teams know not only their immediate opponents but also their potential semi-final matchups, removing the suspense of additional draws.

The quarter-finals are scheduled to begin on April 7 and 8, with second-leg matches taking place a week later. On one side of the bracket, Paris Saint-Germain will face Liverpool in a highly anticipated clash.

PSG advanced emphatically after a dominant aggregate victory over Chelsea, while Liverpool overturned a first-leg deficit to comfortably eliminate Galatasaray. Their encounter revives last season’s meeting, where PSG progressed via a penalty shootout. Liverpool will host the return leg this time.

In another standout tie, Real Madrid will take on Bayern Munich in what promises to be a classic European showdown. Madrid secured their place with a commanding aggregate win over Manchester City, while Bayern cruised past Atalanta with convincing performances in both legs.

The last time these two giants met produced a dramatic finish, with Real Madrid scoring late goals to advance. Bayern Munich will have home advantage in the second leg. The winner of this tie will meet either PSG or Liverpool in the semi-finals.

On the opposite side of the draw, Barcelona will go head-to-head with Atlético Madrid in an all-Spanish encounter. Barcelona arrive in strong form after a dominant display against Newcastle, while Atlético overcame Tottenham across two legs.

The two clubs share a history of intense knockout battles, including previous Champions League meetings where Atlético emerged victorious. Atlético Madrid will host the second leg of this tie.

The final quarter-final fixture features Arsenal against Sporting Lisbon. Arsenal progressed past Bayer Leverkusen, while Sporting produced a remarkable comeback to eliminate Bodø/Glimt.

Despite Arsenal being considered favourites on paper, Sporting have already shown their resilience and previously defeated the English side on penalties in a recent European knockout meeting.

Arsenal will host the return leg. The winner of this matchup will face either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals.

The Champions League final is set to take place on May 30 at the Puskás Arena in Budapest. With a capacity of 67,000, the venue will host Europe’s biggest club match for the first time, marking a historic occasion for the Hungarian capital.
