2025/2026 NWFL Matchday 7: Heartland Queens Take Points Campaign to Rivers Angels

Posted : 20 January 2026

Heartland Queens will resume their quest for vital points on the road when they face rivals and neighbours Rivers Angels in a Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Matchday 7 encounter on Wednesday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The two sides are well-acquainted opponents, having met numerous times in both competitive and friendly fixtures over the years. Their most recent encounter ended in a hard-fought 1–1 draw during Matchday 5 of the 2024 NWFL Super Six at the Nembe City Stadium in Bayelsa State.

Although both teams participated in the 2025 maiden Governor Douye Diri Preseason Tournament in Yenagoa, fate kept the neighbours apart throughout the competition. However, they have once again been drawn together in the nine-team Group A of the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership, setting the stage for this midweek showdown.

The technical benches of both teams have seen changes over time. Rivers Angels, known as the Jewels of Rivers, have transitioned from Coach Whyte Ogbonda to Coach Blankson Tosan Bob, while Coach Obi Ogbala continues to lead Heartland Queens from the dugout.

Heading into Matchday 7, both teams recorded contrasting results in their previous outings. Rivers Angels suffered a 2–0 defeat away to defending champions Bayelsa Queens, while Heartland Queens enjoyed a comfortable 2–0 home victory over Ibom Angels, building momentum ahead of Wednesday’s clash.

The Owerri-based side has been particularly solid in recent weeks, recording two away draws against Naija Ratels and newcomers Pacesetters Queens, alongside their win over Ibom Angels. Coach Ogbala is expected to rely on his standout performers from the last three matches as Heartland Queens make their first visit to Port Harcourt this year.

The experienced coach is unlikely to make wholesale changes to his starting lineup, despite the return of several previously injured players.

On the Group A standings, Heartland Queens sit directly behind Rivers Angels with eight points, trailing league leaders and defending champions Bayelsa Queens by seven points.

Following the Port Harcourt encounter, Heartland Queens will turn their attention to a highly anticipated home clash against Bayelsa Queens in Owerri, a fixture that could significantly shape their campaign.
