2025/2026 NWFL Matchday 1: Heartland Queens Overcome Early Scare to Defeat Ekiti Queens in Season Opener

Posted : 28 November 2025

Heartland Queens launched their 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership campaign on a winning note, battling to a hard-earned 2–1 victory over Ekiti Queens in a pulsating Matchday 1 encounter at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, on November 26.

The contest delivered all the intensity expected of a season opener—drama, pace, and excitement—as spectators remained enthralled from start to finish.

Ekiti Queens stunned the home crowd just four minutes into the game, with midfielder Amarachi Okoronkwo capitalizing on a chance to give the visitors an unexpected lead. The early setback jolted the hosts but also ignited their fighting spirit.

Backed by a vibrant home atmosphere, the Owerri Landladies piled on sustained pressure, forcing Ekiti Queens into a defensive shell.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 13th minute when the visitors conceded a penalty following a handball in the box. Chizoba Johnson stepped forward and confidently converted from the spot to level the score.

Heartland Queens maintained their dominance, and in the 36th minute, Emmanuella James fired home a composed finish to complete the comeback.

The second half saw a more controlled performance from the hosts as they managed the game effectively, resisting late pressure from Ekiti Queens to secure a morale-boosting start to the season.

With three points secured, Heartland Queens now shift focus to a challenging away fixture in Benin City, where they will face Edo Queens—who will be eager to bounce back after suffering a defeat to Bayelsa Queens in their opening match.

The Owerri supporters will be hoping that this gritty and determined display signals a promising season ahead for Heartland Queens.
