Heartland Queens will welcome three-season premium campaigners, Ekiti Queens, to Owerri for the much-anticipated 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership opener on Wednesday, November 26.
In last season’s opening match between these sides, played at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti, the home team triumphed 1–0 thanks to a 74th-minute strike from lanky Olaleye Odunayo.
At the reverse fixture on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, it was the home side’s midterm signee, Blessing Saleh, who secured a solitary goal victory for Heartland Queens.
This season, the three-time league meetings between the sides, across all competitions, will again take place at the main bowl of Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State.
Incidentally, the coaches who masterminded their teams’ one-goal victories in previous encounters, Jacob Vandi and Obi Ogbala, will once more be in the dugout, guiding their sides and hoping to swing the pendulum in their favour.
The Owerri side has been actively scouting and recruiting players to bolster their podium ambitions this season. As kickoff approaches on Wednesday, coach Obi Ogbala’s squad is confident and proud of their recruitment efforts.
Heartland Queens also participated in the maiden edition of the Governor Doyle Diri preseason tournament in Yenagoa, Bayelsa—a 100% premier league competition—designed to test their squad ahead of the season. In addition, the team engaged in several friendly and buildup matches to ensure a successful league campaign.
Expectedly, the experienced and soft-spoken coach Ogbala will field a blend of youth and experience, aiming to start the season on a promising note against the Omoluabi Queens.
While the visitors are unlikely to be easy opponents on their first road trip, the Owerri gaffer is determined to secure all three points in this keenly contested matchup.
After the Owerri clash against Ekiti Queens, Heartland Queens will travel to Benin City to face former champions Edo Queens on Matchday 2 at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Edo State.
