Heartland Queens FC claims NWFL Super Six playoffs spot in grand style

Owerri-based Heartland Queens FC have successfully booked their first-ever place in the NWFL Premiership Super Six playoffs after the completion of the first regular season.


The club attributed the credit for their victory to their sole financiers, the Imo state government under the leadership of Sen. Hope Uzodinma, and the immediate past Commissioner for Youth, Sports & Social Development, Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, for their massive support and sponsorship.


The elite football showdown among the six best teams in the country has the singular honor of deciding the league champions as well as the nation's representatives for the prestigious continental football competition - the CAF Women's Champions League.


The Owerri team qualified for the prime competition in their entire history in grand style with a game at hand against top-flight newcomers, Dannaz Ladies.


Despite losing twice to the Lagos-based side on matchday on Wednesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, the loss became academic and inconsequential as the only thing the Owerri side missed was the rare opportunity to finish top of the eight-team Group A table.


Although nothing was at stake in the encounter between the sides, the Owerri team showed grit and strength with their overwhelming domination of proceedings before a clearly inept umpire deliberately chose to mess up what would have been the most entertaining and thrilling game.


Heartland Queens ended the 2023/24 NWFL Premiership regular season with a princely 24 points in the eight-team Group A, finishing third behind former champions and leaders, Nasarawa Amazons, with an impressive seven wins, three draws, and four losses.


By virtue of their spectacular performance this season and qualification for the Super Six showdown, Heartland Queens are primed to vie for the league crown and the first-ever chance to claim a ticket to represent the country at the continental level.
