The turf of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City is set to come alive on Wednesday, December 3, as familiar rivals Edo Queens host Heartland Queens in a Match Day 2 clash of the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season.
Last season, both teams met on Match Day 2 in Owerri, where Edo Queens emerged victorious before completing a double over the Heartland side later in the campaign. Their most recent meeting came at the maiden Governor Douye Diri Preseason Tournament in Yenagoa, where Edo Queens once again secured a 2–0 win.
The two teams frequently cross paths in both competitive and friendly matches, with records slightly favoring the Benin City side. Wednesday’s showdown provides another opportunity for both coaches — Moses Aduku of Edo Queens and Obi Ogbala of Heartland Queens — to attempt to gain the upper hand in this growing rivalry.
Ahead of the encounter, both teams experienced contrasting fortunes on Match Day 1. Edo Queens suffered a narrow 2–3 defeat to champions Bayelsa Queens in Yenagoa, while Heartland Queens clinched a 2–1 home victory over Ekiti Queens to set the stage for the midweek battle.
Heartland will be eager to avoid another loss to their Benin rivals. Coach Ogbala is expected to retain much of the squad that defeated Ekiti Queens, although minor changes may occur, especially with captain Chimebere Opara doubtful after sustaining an injury in their previous match.
Heartland Queens currently sit higher on the nine-team Group A standings than Edo Queens and will be pushing hard to consolidate their strong start to the season. After Wednesday’s clash in Benin City, the Owerri-based side will be exempt from Match Day 3 fixtures.
