Hannover 96 Sign South African Defender Ime Okon on Four Year Deal

German second division side Hannover 96 have completed the signing of promising defender Ime Okon from South African club SuperSport United. The 21 year old centre back joins on a four year contract following the expiration of his deal in the Premier Soccer League.

Okon made 57 appearances in all competitions for SuperSport, earning praise for his physicality and composure at the back. He recently made his international debut for South Africa at the 2025 COSAFA Cup, further boosting his growing reputation.

Standing at 1.87 meters, Okon is expected to strengthen Hannover’s defensive unit as they continue rebuilding with a youthful squad.

Hannover sporting director Marcus Mann praised the signing, saying, “Ime has great physical qualities and strong potential. He will need time to adjust, but we are convinced by his willingness to learn and develop.”

Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and South African mother, Okon holds dual nationality and is still eligible to play for Nigeria, although he currently represents South Africa internationally.

He spent time training with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine before breaking into the professional ranks with SuperSport, where he made 42 league appearances and scored once.

In a previous interview, Okon said choosing to play for South Africa was “not a difficult decision,” despite his Nigerian heritage.

Okon becomes Hannover’s 13th signing of the summer as the club looks to push for promotion from Bundesliga 2. Under manager Christian Titz, he is expected to gradually adapt to German football and develop into a long term asset.

Ime Okon’s move to Hannover 96 marks a major step in his career. The Nigeria eligible South African defender is seen as a long term investment by the German club, as he prepares to test himself in European football.
