Hamburg Manager Polzin Lauds Philip Otele for High Impact Performance Against Dortmund

Hamburg head coach Merlin Polzin has highlighted the specific qualities that made Philip Otele stand out during the club’s recent Bundesliga fixture. Despite Hamburg suffering a narrow 3–2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park, Otele emerged as a bright spot for the visitors. The Nigerian forward was given a starting role and utilized his physical attributes to unsettle the Dortmund backline throughout the match.

Polzin noted that Otele’s direct approach was fundamental to the team’s offensive strategy during the round 27 encounter. The manager specifically pointed to the winger’s ability to win individual battles and drive the ball forward during transition phases. Speaking to the media after the game, Polzin remarked that the player's knack for seeking out and winning one-on-one duels is a vital asset for the squad.

Tactically, the coach emphasized how Otele helps the team maintain its shape on the field. By staying wide on the left flank, the forward stretches the opposing defense and creates necessary pockets of space for his teammates to exploit. Polzin described this tactical discipline as a "tremendous added value" that allows Hamburg to execute their preferred attacking structure more effectively.

Otele is currently spending the second half of the season on loan from Swiss side FC Basel. Since arriving in the winter transfer window, the 27-year-old has made eight league appearances for the German club. During this period, he has contributed one goal and one assist while showing steady improvement in his integration with the rest of the starting eleven.

The forward’s recent form comes at a critical time as Hamburg prepares for a significant rivalry match against Werder Bremen. Otele will likely play a key role in that fixture as he continues to audition for a permanent contract.
