Hamburg Chief Backs Torunarigha Despite Club's Search for New Defender

Hamburger SV sporting director Claus Costa has reaffirmed his confidence in Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha despite confirming that the Bundesliga club is still working to recruit another central defender before the start of the 2026/27 season.

Hamburg are looking to strengthen their back line following the departure of Croatian defender Luka Vušković, whose loan spell ended after the 2025/26 campaign. The club's recruitment plans have sparked speculation about the future of Torunarigha, but Costa insists the search is intended to improve squad depth rather than replace the Nigerian international.

Speaking in an interview with Bild, Costa admitted that signing another centre-back remains one of the club's priorities ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

"Yes, we are still looking for a centre-back," Costa said before praising Torunarigha's contribution. He added that the Nigerian "played an excellent game defensively in the centre last season in Mainz," highlighting the defender's quality and versatility.

Torunarigha joined Hamburg ahead of the club's return to the Bundesliga and quickly established himself as a dependable option in defence. Last season, he impressed when deployed in the middle of a back three during a league draw against Mainz, producing one of his strongest performances after stepping in for the suspended Vušković.

The 28-year-old has become an important member of Hamburg's squad thanks to his composure, aerial ability, and experience. His displays have earned praise from both the coaching staff and club officials, reinforcing his position as a key player ahead of the new campaign.

Torunarigha also remains part of Nigeria's plans after switching his international allegiance from Germany in 2023. Since making his Super Eagles debut, he has continued to establish himself as a reliable defensive option and is expected to compete for a regular starting place in upcoming international fixtures.

Hamburg continue their preparations for the new Bundesliga season with plans to strengthen the squad in several positions. While another centre-back is expected to arrive before the transfer window closes, Costa's comments underline the club's belief that Torunarigha will continue to play an important role in the team's defensive setup.
