Gvardiol Backs Enzo Maresca to Succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has thrown his support behind new manager Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian as the "perfect" choice to guide the club following the departure of Pep Guardiola. Maresca has taken over after Guardiola ended his trophy-laden 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium, ushering in a new chapter for the Premier League champions.

The 46-year-old signed a three-year contract with City after previous managerial success, including leading Leicester City to the Championship title and winning the FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea. His first match in charge ended in a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan before City lost on penalties during a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong.

Despite the result, Gvardiol expressed confidence in Maresca's ability to build on City's recent success. The Croatian defender praised his new manager's qualities, saying the club selected him for good reason and that he brings fresh tactical ideas to the squad.

"I think he has the quality and some new ideas. We still need to see exactly how we are going to play, but I think he is the perfect one," Gvardiol said. "Of course, it will take time because changing managers is never easy. Our job is to help him, listen to him and adapt as quickly as possible."

Gvardiol also revealed that he has already spoken with Maresca, with their initial discussions focusing on his recent injury and his role under Guardiola. He believes the players have an important responsibility to support the new coach as he implements his philosophy.

Maresca has made it clear that he intends to introduce his own ideas rather than simply replicate Guardiola's approach. While the transition may take time, both the manager and his players are optimistic about maintaining Manchester City's high standards and competing for major honours this season.
