Gusau Exits WAFU B Presidency as Burkina Faso’s Sawadogo Takes Over

Ibrahim Musa Gusau has stepped down as President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B following his departure from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Burkina Faso Football Federation president Colonel-Major Oumarou Sawadogo has taken over the regional leadership.

Gusau's exit from the WAFU B presidency comes days after he resigned as NFF president. His departure means Nigeria will no longer hold the top leadership position in the regional football body.

WAFU B welcomed Sawadogo as its new president and congratulated the Burkina Faso administrator on his appointment. The organisation said it looked forward to working with him to advance football across the region.

Sawadogo brings previous experience within WAFU B to the position. He previously served as the zone's second vice-president before becoming president of the Burkina Faso Football Federation in August 2024.

The Burkinabe administrator's rise to the WAFU B presidency follows the leadership changes that began after Ghana Football Association president Kurt-Edwin Simeon Okraku moved into a CAF leadership role. Okraku had been elected WAFU B president in November 2024, with Gusau serving as first vice-president and Sawadogo as second vice-president.

Gusau later assumed the WAFU B presidency after Okraku stepped aside to focus on his responsibilities within CAF. Gusau subsequently led the regional body from its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

WAFU B comprises seven football associations: Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Benin Republic and Togo. The zone oversees regional competitions and development programmes involving the member associations.

Sawadogo's appointment provides continuity within the organisation as it prepares for another phase of regional football development. His responsibilities will include strengthening cooperation among member associations and supporting competitions and youth development across the zone.

The leadership change also marks the end of a period in which Nigeria held significant influence within WAFU B through Gusau's dual role as NFF and regional president. Sawadogo will now be expected to build on the existing structure while advancing Burkina Faso's influence within West African football administration.
