Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Tournament: Organisers explain Barau FC withdrawal

Posted : 12 August 2026

The organisers of the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament 2026 have moved to clarify the circumstances surrounding Barau FC’s withdrawal from the competition, following concerns raised by the club over the conduct of the tournament.

Barau FC had alleged unprofessional conduct and breaches of football regulations by the organisers, prompting the tournament management to provide its own account of the events leading to the club’s exit.

According to the organisers, Barau FC requested that participating teams be scheduled to play matches on consecutive days, among other proposals relating to the match programme and grouping of teams.

The requests, however, were turned down by the tournament management, which said the decision was taken to safeguard the welfare of players and ensure fairness and equal treatment for all clubs involved.

The organisers stressed that the tournament schedule and groupings must be determined by the competition’s management rather than by the preferences of an individual participating club.

They also acknowledged the experience of Mr Dominic Iorfa, who previously featured in the tournament with Lobi Stars and helped the club win the competition in 2024.

While respecting Iorfa’s experience and contribution to the tournament, the organisers maintained that all participating clubs must operate within the same competition framework.

The tournament management reiterated its commitment to conducting the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament in line with the principles of fairness, professionalism, player welfare and equal treatment.

It added that these principles would remain central to the organisation of the 2026 edition as the competition continues.
