Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Tournament: Nasarawa United punish Pillars’ missed chances

Nasarawa United FC made an impressive statement in their opening Group Stage fixture of the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament in Katsina, defeating Kano Pillars 2-0 in a disciplined performance.

The Solid Miners endured a first half in which Kano Pillars enjoyed more possession and tried to control proceedings, but they remained compact and organised while looking to exploit spaces on the counter.

Despite the intensity of the encounter, neither side managed to break the deadlock before half-time, with both defences holding firm.

Nasarawa United emerged from the interval with renewed purpose and eventually found the breakthrough in the 55th minute.

Musa Yakubu finished off a swift counter-attacking move to put the Solid Miners ahead and reward their disciplined approach.

The goal forced Kano Pillars to commit more players into attack as they searched for an equaliser, but Nasarawa United remained resolute and successfully frustrated their opponents in the final third.

Pillars’ increased attacking commitment subsequently created spaces for the Solid Miners to exploit, and Nasarawa United sealed the victory in the 90th minute when Danban Alawo found the net to make it 2-0.

Nasarawa United’s ability to remain organised without the ball and punish Kano Pillars on the counter proved decisive, while Pillars’ dominance in possession failed to translate into enough clear-cut scoring opportunities.

The victory gives the Solid Miners an ideal start to their Group Stage campaign and provides an early boost to their confidence as preparations for the new season continue.

Kano Pillars, meanwhile, will have to regroup and sharpen their attacking play ahead of their next fixture in the tournament.
