Former Katsina United forward Promise Damala came back to haunt his former club as Wikki Tourists fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in their opening Group Stage match of the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-Season Tournament at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
The Changi Boys started the encounter brightly and deservedly took the lead through Mubarak Shahada, who finished a promising attacking move to put the hosts ahead.
Katsina United controlled much of the first half, enjoying greater possession and creating a number of opportunities as they looked to establish an early advantage in the tournament.
Wikki Tourists, however, returned from the interval with greater purpose and began putting the Katsina United defence under sustained pressure.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 55th minute when substitute Damala, who previously represented Katsina United, found the back of the net to bring the Bauchi-based side level.
The equaliser sparked an open contest, with both sides committing players forward in search of the winning goal.
Katsina United created opportunities to restore their lead, while Wikki Tourists also threatened on the counter, but neither side could produce the decisive finish.
The encounter consequently ended 1-1, with both teams earning a point from their opening Group Stage fixture.
Shahada, who gave Katsina United the lead and remained a constant threat throughout the match, was named Man of the Match for his energetic display and attacking contribution.
