Borussia Dortmund delivered a convincing 3-0 win over Union Berlin on Sunday, with Serhou Guirassy and Felix Nmecha the standout performers.
Guirassy opened the scoring just before halftime, finishing from a Yan Couto cross, before doubling the lead in the 58th minute with a composed chip after a clever assist from Maximilian Beier. His brace means he has now found the net in nine consecutive matches.
Any fears of a late collapse — similar to last week’s setback at St. Pauli — were erased when Nmecha sealed the result with a thunderous volley in the closing minutes. The victory was a much-needed boost after Dortmund’s struggles against Essen in the German Cup and their frustrating draw at St. Pauli to start the Bundesliga campaign.
Chelsea loanee Aaron Anselmino impressed on his full debut in central defense, helping secure a clean sheet. The win extends Dortmund’s remarkable home record against Union Berlin, with 21 goals scored and only five conceded across their last six encounters.
In other Bundesliga action, Mainz rescued a 1-1 draw at Wolfsburg thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Nadiem Amiri, after Aaron Zehnter’s early strike. Wolfsburg’s hopes of holding on were dashed further when Mattias Svanberg was sent off in added time. Promoted Cologne were due to host Freiburg later in the evening.
Guardiola Furious After City’s Collapse
Over in the Premier League, Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat at Brighton, leaving Pep Guardiola furious with his team’s performance.
City had taken control early, with Erling Haaland scoring his 88th league goal in just 100 appearances. However, missed chances proved costly, and the tide turned after the break. James Milner equalized from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, becoming the second-oldest scorer in Premier League history, before Brajan Gruda struck in the 89th minute to complete Brighton’s comeback.
Guardiola did not mince words after the match, accusing his players of abandoning their style. “We forgot to play,” he admitted, pointing to their decision to go long instead of maintaining control. The loss followed last week’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, raising alarm over City’s early-season form.
Rodri, making his first league start in nearly a year after injury, was equally blunt, criticizing his teammates for “kids’ mistakes” and warning that the team must raise their level if they are to compete.
With two straight defeats, City face mounting pressure heading into the international break. Guardiola’s men will next face Manchester United on September 14 in a derby that already carries huge significance for their season.
