Guinea-Bissau U17 Disqualified From WAFU A Qualifiers Over Age Fraud

Guinea-Bissau have been disqualified from the WAFU A U17 Championship in Senegal after medical tests raised concerns over the eligibility of players in their squad. The tournament serves as the regional qualifying competition for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

The decision followed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests conducted to verify the ages of players registered for the competition. The tournament organising committee confirmed the disqualification after the test results indicated violations of the age regulations.

The sanction has immediately changed the structure of Group B. The group was initially scheduled to feature four teams, but Guinea-Bissau's removal leaves Mali, Liberia and Guinea to continue the qualifying campaign.

For Guinea-Bissau, the decision represents a major setback in their attempt to qualify for the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations. The team will now take no further part in the regional tournament, while the remaining Group B nations continue their battle for progression.

The development also revives concerns over age verification in African youth football. MRI examinations have increasingly been used in CAF and regional competitions to help determine whether players meet the required age criteria.

Guinea-Bissau's latest sanction is particularly significant because it is not the first time the country has faced a similar problem in the WAFU A U17 competition. The team was also disqualified from the 2024 edition in Senegal over age-related eligibility issues.

The repeat incident could place further scrutiny on the country's youth football administration. It also highlights the importance of strict player registration and age verification before regional competitions begin.

The 2026 tournament is already underway, with Senegal making a strong start in another group. Senegal defeated Mauritania 4-0 in their opening match, adding further significance to the qualification race as teams compete for places at the continental U17 tournament.

With Guinea-Bissau removed, Mali, Liberia and Guinea now have a clearer route through Group B. Their results will determine which sides remain in contention for a place at the next stage of the WAFU A qualification process.
