The Guinean Football Federation has formally asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to move its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against South Africa to a neutral venue over security concerns.
According to reports, Guinea believes the ongoing anti-migrant protests in parts of South Africa could pose a risk to the safety of its players, coaching staff, officials and travelling supporters. The federation has therefore submitted an official request to CAF seeking a change of venue for the fixture.
The qualifier is expected to be one of the standout matches in the race for qualification to the 2027 AFCON finals, with both Guinea and South Africa aiming to secure a place at the continental tournament.
Guinea's request comes amid concerns over the security environment surrounding the planned fixture. The federation believes relocating the game to a neutral country would provide a safer environment for everyone involved while ensuring the match is played under suitable conditions.
CAF has acknowledged receipt of communications from member associations in similar situations in the past, but the continental governing body has not yet announced a decision on Guinea's latest request.
At the time of writing, CAF has neither confirmed a venue change nor indicated whether the fixture will proceed as originally scheduled in South Africa. The governing body is expected to assess the security situation before making a final ruling.
If CAF approves the request, the match would be played at a neutral venue chosen by the continental body. However, if the request is rejected, South Africa would retain hosting rights for the qualifier under the existing schedule.
Both teams are expected to continue preparations while awaiting CAF's decision. Any change in venue could have logistical and sporting implications, including travel arrangements, home support and match-day operations.
The 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign is set to feature several closely contested fixtures as African nations battle for places at the tournament. Guinea and South Africa are both regarded as strong contenders, making their meeting one of the most anticipated ties of the qualification series.
CAF is expected to communicate its decision to both football federations once its review of the request and the prevailing security situation has been completed.
