Guido Rodriguez Joins West Ham as Sixth Summer Signing

Posted : 06 August 2024

Argentinian midfielder Guido Rodriguez joined West Ham as their sixth summer signing on Tuesday. The 30-year-old, who played a crucial role in Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory and their Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024, was acquired on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Real Betis.

Rodriguez spent the past four-and-a-half years in Spain, where he became an essential player for Real Betis, helping the club secure European football for four consecutive seasons. Expressing his enthusiasm, Rodriguez stated, "It’s every footballer’s dream to play in the Premier League, and I was very excited when I heard that West Ham were interested in me. I will bring experience to the team, and though I’m aware the Premier League is very physical, I’m ready to put the work in to make sure I’m up to the task."

West Ham has bolstered their squad under new manager Julen Lopetegui by signing German international striker Niclas Fuellkrug, wingers Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme, and defender Max Kilman. Rodriguez's addition is seen as a significant boost to the team’s ambitions for the upcoming season.

Technical Director Tim Steidten highlighted Rodriguez's signing as a "statement of intent," aiming to improve upon the club's ninth-place finish in the Premier League last season. "This is a massive moment for West Ham United in bringing a player of Guido’s pedigree to the club," Steidten said. "He is a player I have admired for a long time, and we couldn’t be happier to have completed the deal to bring him to east London."
